육조단경의 수사학적 고찰-수사법을 중심으로-

『육조단경』은 선종의 육대 조사인 혜능이 한 법문을 기록한 것으로, 간결한 언어 속에 불법의 심원한 이치를 분명하게 드러내어 선종 교의의 요체가 된다고 할 수 있다. 본고는 『육조단경』이 언어 밖 불법의 도리를 간명하게 표현하면서도 수사법을 활용하여 변화와 집중을 유도하고 이해와 공감을 촉진하였다고 보고 수사학의 관점에서 표현방식에 기반하여 설문법과 비유법을 중심으로 그 형식과 내용을 고찰하였다. 먼저 설문법은 질문을 제기하고 답하는 자문자답 형식의 수사법으로, 『육조단경』에서는 주로 개념을 설명하는 데 사용되었다. 구체적으로 정혜, 무상, 무념, 좌선, 선정, 청정법신불, 천백억화신불, 원만보신불, 자성자도, 참회, 마하, 반야, 바라밀, 대 선지식의 개념을 묻고 답을 통해 설명하는 방식으로 운용되었는데, 설문법을 통해 주의를 환기하고 변화를 유도하며 집중도를 높일 수 있었다. 비유법은 설명하고자 하는 대상을 다른 사물에 빗대어 설명하는 수사법으로, 『육조단경』에서는 정혜 일체, 자성 청정, 근기의 차이 등을 설명하는데 사용되었다. 특히 정혜 일체의 도리를 등불에 비유하거나 자성 청정의 이치를 해, 달, 구름, 바람, 하늘에 비유하며, 자성의 원융함을 바다와 비에 비유하여 설명한 부분은 추상적 이치를 형상화하여 이해하고 자각하도록 하는 효과가 있었다.
Abstract
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch』 is a language that records the teachings of Huineng, a Zen monk from the Tang Dynasty in China. It can be said to be the essence of Zen doctrine by clearly revealing the profound principles of Buddhism in simple language. This paper examined 『The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch』 from the perspective of rhetoric, focusing on the method of survey and metaphor. First, the survey method is a question-and-answer type of rhetoric that raises and answers questions. In 『The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch』, it was mainly used to ask questions and explain concepts through answers. Through the survey method, it was used to draw attention, induce change, and increase concentration. I was able to. Metaphor is a rhetorical method that compares the object to be explained to another object, and in 『The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch』, metaphor was effective in helping people understand and realize abstract principles by embodying them.
