Abstract

This paper examines what Korean EFL learners view as the sources of their anxiety. Researchers in SLA have long recognized the negative effect of anxiety on language learning. The first step in alleviating this negative effect is a detailed understanding of anxiety and its specific sources. The data were collected through interviews with eight college-level learners. The various reasons for participant anxiety revealed in the present study were low self-esteem, competitiveness, personality characteristics, lack of group membership, speaking English in front of the class, little declarative knowledge, lack of preparation, uneven allocation of turns, and overt explicit error correction. Several recommendations for EFL teachers to alleviate student anxiety emerge from these findings.
