초록
This article looks into the tragic yet thought-provoking relationship between Paul and Susan as portrayed in Julian Barnes’s latest novel, The Only Story, in order to illuminate the way Barnes’s novel adds to the discourses of love. Prior discourse of love, I would argue, has been divided into two opposites: love as a means to propagate ideological social norms, and love as an object of glorification for its inherently transcending trait. Breaking away from these approaches, my article delves into Barnes’s astute description of a romantic relation which, neither exclusively celebratory nor entirely hopeless, opens up for a new ethic of love for its rethinking of difficult love.
