초록

This paper explores the dynamics and effect of Parsi women’s affiliation and solidarity in the men’s world through black and white magic in Rohinton Mistry’s debut novel Such a Long Journey. Unlike previous studies, it shows why and how Mistry’s female characters are not simply confined to the domestic sphere, thereby acting to subvert the hegemonic order and expand the boundaries of family and the Parsi Zoroastrian community in India through female bonding in the form of superstitious rituals. In particular, the paper takes women’s minimal space like a kitchen as an example for interrogating and transforming the hegemonic narrative and male-dominated spatial boundaries. In the end, the study shows that female characters’ partnership in such a subversive practice serves to provide avenues for female bonding and agency of empowerment, opening up a possibility of symbolic inversion in power relations and spatial arrangement.
