Abstract
Woman as the Other and the Subversion of the Sameness in John Keats’s Isabella, or the Pot of Basil Lee, Eun-AThe purpose of this paper is to read John Keats’s first romance, Isabella, or Pot of Basil’ not merely as the story of a legend but as the woman’s story which has the potential to subvert the barrier of classes. Because of low origins, poor education, and bad health, Keats always had to stand on the other’s position. For these reasons, he had his doubts about phallogocentrism which Western metaphysical philosophy had emphasized, and tried to find other’s voice regarded as the inferior thing and to replace it on the proper position.Reflecting on Keats’s intention, this paper regards Isabella, the female main character of Isabella, or Pot of Basil, as a scapegoat of phallogocentrism. But she remains a potentially subversive signifier of difference, though she was victimized and oppressed in the patriarchal order. That’s why she possesses the power to refuse that order and the latent ability to change the world bound by reason and rule. This analysis rescues the poet from the label of “humanist saint” which limits our understanding of Keats.
