초록
English used in the countries belonging to ESL/Outer Circle community and EFL/Expanding Circle community is inclined to reveal differences with that of ENL/Inner Circle communities. Research on that difference has been performed by analyzing corpora consisting of spoken and written data, and describes differences between item usage within grammatical classes. Modals in particular vary significantly in semantic complexity between registers and from region to region. The present study analyzes tokens retrieved from written corpora consisting of news articles. It examines the differences between English newspapers published in the different circles in terms of usage of permission /possibility modal auxiliaries such as can, could, may, and might. The findings support the contention that regional differences occur in the usage of all of these modals.
