Abstract

The present paper critically examines the conservative and monastic-centered view of the lay arahant in Theravāda Buddhism by focusing on the debates recorded in the Kathāvatthu and the Milindapañha. All the four groups (cattāro purisā) comprising the Buddhist community have but one ultimate goal: the attainment of Nibbanā. One who has realized Nibbāna in this very life is called an arahant. As far as the earliest texts of the Pāli canon are concerned, the Buddha never explicitly denied the existence of lay arahants. However, in the period of Sectarian Buddhism, this matter became an issue for heated debate among the different Buddhist schools. In the Kathāvatthu the Theravādins deny the existence of lay arahants, but the Uttarāpathakas, which are thought to be a offshoot of the Mahāsāṃghika, recognize it. In the Milindapañha, Nāgasena shows a more nuanced attitude towards this matter. He reluctantly admits the existence of lay arahants with the restriction or reservation that when a layman attains arahantship, he should enter the order the same day or else he would pass away into final Nibbāna that very day. In fact, this is a codification of the orthodox Theravādin view towards the lay arahant. The debates recorded in the Milindapañha and the Kathāvatthu may reflect a possible tension between the monastic hegemony and the increasing prevalence of laypeople in those days. This is possibly linked to the five points (pañca-vastu) that infringe upon the dignity and privilege of arahants in the period of Sectarian Buddhism. In a sense, the Uttarāpathakas in the Kathāvatthu and King Milinda in the Milindapañha represent the laity who wanted equal rights to monastics in the realm of spiritual attainment. In fact, this new movement seriously threatened the monastic hegemony and the absolute sanctity of arahants, and thus the Theravādins had to formulate a more conservative and monastic-centered view of the lay arahant than that of Early Buddhism. The Uttarāpathakas’ view of the lay arahant appears to be the beginning of the erosion of the arahant ideal, and a turning point for the development of the Bodhisattva ideal in later Mahāyāna Buddhism, which is open to both monastics and laity.
