초록

‘모든 중생이 붓다의 본질(如來藏, tathāgatagarbha)을 지니고 있다’는 여래장 사상의 가르침을 철학적으로 조직화하고 체계화시킨 인도의 대승논서가 『보성론(Ratnagotravibhāga[vyākhyā])』이다. 본고에서는 이 논서의 핵심 주제 중 하나인 ‘여래장의 세 가지 의미, 즉 법신(dharmakāya)과 진여(tathatā)와 종성(gotra)’을 중심으로 여래장 사상이 함유하고 있는 그 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 『보성론』 Ⅰ.27-28게송의 여래장의 세 가지 의미와 관련한 범본․한역본․티벳역본 3본 대조를 통해 늑나마제(勒那摩提, Ratnamati) 한역의 특징을 밝히고자 한다. 그리고 티벳 최초로 『보성론』 주석서를 남긴 옥 로댄쎄랍(rNgog Blo ldan shes rab)이 여래장의 세 가지 의미를 어떻게 해석하고 있는지를 검토할 예정이다. 끝으로 중국에서는 진제(眞諦, Paramārtha)의 『불성론』을 중심으로 여래장의 세 가지 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 『보성론』의 여래장 사상에 대한 최초의 철학적 견해를 피력한 진제와 옥 로댄쎄랍은 단순히 여래장 사상만을 전도한 것이 아니라, 유가행파의 삼성설(trisvabhāva)과 알라야식(ālayavijñāna), 그리고 중관학파의 공(śūnyatā)사상 등을 여래장 이론과 결합시키려는 철학적 입장을 선보이고 있다. 이를 통해 『보성론』 I.27-28게송에 나타난 여래장의 세 가지 의미가 중국불교사와 티벳불교사에서 최초에 어떻게 수용되고 이해되었는지에 대한 사상적 차이의 단편들을 일부분이나마 고찰할 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

The Ratnagotravibhāga [vyākhyā] is a Mahayana treatise of India, and is the result of efforts to organize and systematize the philosophy of the tathāgatagarbha doctrine, that “all sentient beings have Buddha-nature (tathāgatagarbha).” In this paper, I attempt to investigate the significance of the tathāgatagarbha doctrine, with reference to “dharmakāya, tathatā, and gotra as the three meanings of Tathāgatagarbha” as one of this treatise’s essential topics. First of all, I attempt to clarify the differences in the Sanskrit text, and its Chinese and Tibetan translations, as to the three meanings of tathāgatagarbha appearing in the verses I.27-28 of the Ratnagotravibhāga. Then, I investigate how rNgog Blo ldan shes rab (1059-1109), who composed its earliest commentary in Tibet, interpreted the three meanings of tathāgatagarbha. Lastly, I investigate the three meanings of tathāgatagarbha with reference to the Fóxìng lùn (佛性論) by Paramārtha (499-569) in China. In proposing the earliest philosophical positions on the tathāgatagarbha doctrine of the Ratnagotravibhāga in the history of Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism, rNgog Blo ldan shes rab and Paramārtha not only transmitted the tathāgatagarbha doctrine but also presented philosophical positions that combine the tathāgatagarbha doctrine with the ālayavijñāna doctrine of the Yogācāra School and the śūnyatā doctrine of the Madhyamaka School. Through the above investigations, I attempt to delineate, at least partially, the doctrinal differences in the process of adopting and interpreting the three meanings of tathāgatagarbha in verses I.27-28 of the Ratnagotravibhāga within the history of Chinese Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism.
