초록
This paper presents an approach to the central class of coordinating conjunctions in English, such as and, or, and but. In this approach, it is argued that these coordinating conjunctions can be further classified according to their grammatical properties including recursion and omission. They are first divided into recursive (and, or) and non-recursive (but) types, and the recursive type in turn is subdivided into omissible (and) and non-omissible (or) types. This systematic taxonomy is also elaborated in terms of syntactic gradience (Aarts 2004, 2007). We show that and is more prototypical than or and or is more prototypical than but, such as and > or > but, and that but is less prototypical.
