Abstract

This paper examines the style of business casual worn by Korean white-collar workers. As major companies in Korea lowers their dress code for employees and the workers enjoy more free time due to the reduced working hours, the office workers came to prefer relaxed and comfortable business casual style to the strict formal style. To classify this phenomenon with the category of business casual, the concept of business and its changes were meticulously studied with various articles. After that, this paper attempts to do concrete analysis of this phenomenon by reviewing 880 photographs of men aged 20 to 40 taken at the three major subway stations (Kwanghwamoon, Kangnam, Yeouido). This analysis is conducted to find out the noticeable wearing types of business casual, and the use of items in the respective wearing type, and the stylistic characteristics of the classified types. According to the result of this analysis, the types of business casual style are classified into semi-formal style, casual-jacket style, half-coat style, cardigan style, and jumper style. The style of business casual is presented by coordinating various inner-wear and casual pants with the outwears such as casual jacket, half coat, cardigan, and jumper. Casual and sporty items, such as cardigan, jumper, T-shirts, polo shirts, denim pants, backpacks, and snickers, are vigorously utilized in the coordination.
