초록

This thesis examines the ways in which Shakespeare interacted with and altered the genre of prose romance in the context of early modern England, with a specific focus on his play The Winter’s Tale. Critics with extensive knowledge in the field of drama production during his time hold ‘The Law of Unity’ in high regard, as it renders time, settings, and actions with such theatrical authenticity that audiences are able to completely engage with the play. This thesis argues that Shakespeare converted prose romance into compelling theatrical devices, surpassing the constraints of both print and performance. His innovative dramatization of romance narratives and his mastery of “double irony” facilitated the evocation of profound emotional responses, simultaneously prompting audiences to broaden their imaginative perspectives.
