Abstract

As fashion is a basic human desire and reflects aesthetic consciousness, emotions and spirit, modern fashion tells the psychology of modern people. Since the mid-2000s, in particular, fashion trends have turned to the past and utilized traditional materials and technique. Among them, modern designers have widely tapped into patchwork that can be delivered in a variety of ways. Thus, this study is to identify the concept, origin and expressions of patchwork and its aesthetic characteristics based on the expressions, and to understand the value. Patchwork is differently produced in accordance the irregular structure and combination. This study found that patchwork reflects repetitive, diverse and formative value. When different figures combine in a regular manner, repetitions of rhythm and movement appear. And patchwork is a very liberal expression and good to combine different texture or materials. Also, it can deliver wide-ranging aesthetic values by blending different trends and cultures. This is well-aligned with the modern context of diversity, In addition, its intended forms demonstrate potential of creative design development. Modern fashion is ceaselessly evolving by the contemporary and cultural demands, which makes it more important to develop creative designs. Therefore, if patchwork techniques are more diversified and combined with other techniques, such efforts will expand the realm of patchwork and help limitlessly creating new designs.
