Abstract
In biblical narratives, a narrator puts or “intrudes” himself into the narrative, which is called “narrator's intrusion.” This helps readers get important information for a better understanding of the story. Also, it guides the reading of the narrative by forming an orientation. Narrator’s intrusion plays an important role in the narrative strategy of the narrator. Up to now, there have been no scientific studies on narrator’s intrusion. This study, however, will be a first attempt to analyze narrator’s intrusions. This study shows that the narrator does not enter the stage as a character in a narrator's intrusion. Rather, the narrator shows himself as a voice. In addition, the narrator positions himself in a zero focalization when he intrudes himself into the narrative, whether he narrates the story in the first person or third person. Also, there is no narrated time in the narrator's intrusion. Based on these criteria, various examples of narrator's intrusion can be found both in the Old and New Testaments. This paper classifies narrator’s intrusion into the following two categories: “intrusion as direct speech act” and “intrusion as indirect speech act,” based on whether the narrator speaks to the reader directly or indirectly. Furthermore, intrusions as indirect speech act are classified into the sub-categories of “analeptic intrusion” and “dilatative intrusion,” based on their function. This study shows clearly that narrator's intrusion does not play a role as a simple footnote but as an essential element of narrative strategy, especially in the Fourth Gospel.
