구티에레즈의 가난에 대한 연구 – 영성 신학적 관점으로

메데인 문헌과 푸에블라 문헌에서 나타난 라틴 아메리카의 가난에 대한 신학은 연대성과 사회 정의와 관련된 ‘가난한 이를 위한 우선적 선택’이라는 가난의 영성을 제시했는데, 구티에레즈의 신학은 이러한 흐름의 시초라고 평할 수 있다. 그래서 본고는 페루 신학자인 구티에레즈의 가난과 ‘가난한 이를 위한 우선적 선택’을 영성 신학적 관점에서 고찰하였다. 그가 제시하는 가난과 가난의 영성의 개념을 정리하고 그 특징과 공헌, 한계 등에 대해서 분석하고 평가했다. 그는 성서를 기반으로 ‘부끄러운 처지’로서의 물질적 가난과 ‘영적 어린이’로서의 영적 가난, 이 두 가지 의미의 개념을 제시한다. 그리고 세 번째 의미로서의 가난은 ‘연대와 저항에의 투신으로서의 가난’이며 후에 ‘가난한 이를 위한 우선적 선택’이란 말로 표현되는데, 이것이 그가 제시하는 가난의 영성이라고 볼 수 있다. 가난의 원인을 없애기 위해 가난한 이들과 연대하여 가난한 이들 세계에 들어가 스스로 가난한 이가 되는 이 실천(prassi)이 바로 구티에레즈의 ‘가난한 이를 위한 우선적 선택’이다. ‘가난한 이를 위한 우선적 선택’은 공동체적이고 현실적인 영성이며, 동시에 하느님 중심적, 그리스도 중심적인 특징을 갖는다. 그래서 이 영성 안에 관상과 실천이 통합되어 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 구티에레즈는 이 영성을 통해서 가난에 대한 새로운 신학적 관점을 제시했고, 현실에서 고통받고 있는 가난한 이에 대한 관심을 불러일으켰으며, 가난의 구조적인 원인에 대해서 주목하고, 연대적 가난 안에서 물질적 가난과 영적 가난이 어떻게 통합되는지 설명한다. 하지만 가난한 이를 위한 우선적 선택이 가난한 계급에 들어가는 것으로 환원하는 듯한 인상을 주고, 가난한 이들이 느끼고 행하는 것을 교회가 따라야 할 진리인 것처럼 절대화하는 인상을 주는 위험성도 보인다. 교회는 이 위험성을 경계하면서도 구티에레즈의 의미있는 영성적 기여를 받아들여야 한다. 가난한 교회, 가난한 이를 우선적으로 선택하는 희생적인 교회의 모습이 복음 선포라는 자신의 본연의 임무를 효과적으로 수행하게 할 것이다.
Abstract
The theology of poverty in Latin America in the Medellin and Puebla documents suggested the spirituality of poverty as the ‘preferential option for the poor’ related to solidarity and social justice, and Gutierrez’s theology can be said to be the beginning of this trend. Therefore, this paper examines the poverty and the ‘preferential option for the poor’ of Peruvian theologian Gutierrez from a spiritual theological perspective. An attempt was made to organize the concept of poverty and the spirituality of poverty that he suggests, and to analyze and evaluate its characteristics, contributions, and limitations. Based on the Bible, he presents the concept of two meanings of poverty: material poverty as a ‘scandalous situation’ and spiritual poverty as ‘spiritual childhood’. And ‘poverty as a commitment to solidarity and protest’, which is later expressed as the‘preferential option for the poor’, defines poverty as the third meaning, which can be seen as the spirituality of poverty that he suggests. This practice (prassi) of becoming poor by entering the world of the poor in solidarity with the poor in order to eliminate the cause of poverty is Gutierrez's ‘preferential option for the poor’. ‘preferential option for the poor’ is a communal and realistic spirituality, and at the same time has theocentric and Christocentric characteristics. So we can see that contemplation and practice are integrated in this spirituality. Through this spirituality, Gutierrez presented a new theological perspective on poverty, aroused interest in the poor who are suffering in miserable reality, focused on the structural causes of poverty, and explained how material and spiritual poverty are integrated in solidarity poverty. However, there is also the danger of giving the impression that he reduces the preferential option for the poor to entering the poor class, and absolutizes what the poor feel and do as if it were a truth that the church should follow. The Church must be wary of this danger, yet accept Gutierrez’s meaningful spiritual contribution. The poor church, a sacrificial church that prefers the poor, will effectively carry out its mission of proclaiming the gospel.
