Abstract
This interdisciplinary study aims to compare and analyze the representation of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Korean drama <the Good Doctor> and its Japanese adaptation <グッド·ドクタ〡>(<the Good Doctor>) from a cultural studies perspective, while critically examining its implications through the lens of disability studies. The ultimate goal is to explore desirable directions for cultural communication and exchange and the representation of disability as cultural diversity through K-dramas. From the perspective of cultural communication and exchange, we examined the transcultural adaptation patterns of the two dramas featuring protagonists with ASD. The communication and variation of the medical drama genre expanded into the hybrid genre characteristics of Korean medical dramas, blending expertise and heroism with family, love, and fantasy elements, while introducing a genius doctor protagonist with ASD to emphasize dramatic development, purity, and empathy. When adapted transculturally in Japan, the drama focused on the expertise and realism of Japanese medical dramas while being condensed into refined purity. Additionally, both dramas exhibit intertextuality through a shared core element of mutual growth narrative, including the American adaptation. While the Korean drama emphasized the genius protagonist with ASD and the concept of a good man, the Japanese drama focused on the pediatric surgery community and the concept of a good doctor in its localization process. From the perspective of exploring cultural diversity, we examined the achievements and limitations in the representation of individuals with ASD. These dramas have contributed to raising social awareness and improving perceptions of individuals with ASD by criticizing discrimination and presenting solidarity and interdependent coexistence of marginalized minorities. However, they also reinforce misunderstandings and prejudices by distorting representations of ASD or engaging in cultural appropriation. As early attempts at portraying individuals with ASD, these works exhibit a mixture of medical and social models of disability, showcasing both significant achievements and limitations. To facilitate cultural communication and exchange through K-dramas, active transcultural adaptations and supporting research are essential. Additionally, to address the challenges of representing disability as cultural diversity in K-drama, various efforts are needed, including portraying the diversity and individuality of individuals with ASD across different drama genres, providing disability awareness training for production staff, involving individuals with disabilities and disability experts from various fields in the production process, and fostering sensitivity to cultural appropriation.
