한국 전통무용 전용극장 기본 원리에 관한 고찰

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine an exclusive theater for traditional dance. Traditional dance performances have mostly been given on the proscenium stage since the stage was introduced from the West a century ago. It is taken for granted as it has been done for a long time, and whether this type of theater is suitable for traditional dance or not has scarcely been taken into account. It's time to cast away this stereotyped idea and to consider what type of theater is especially appropriate for traditional dance. This study is an effort to reflect on this practice and to discuss how to give a traditional dance performance tailored to its unique characteristics. The characteristics of seven major intangible cultural assets of dance designated by the government including ‘Seungmu’(僧舞), ‘Salpurichum’(살푸리춤) and ‘Taepyeongmu’(太平舞) were explored to determine what an exclusive theater for traditional dance should be like in form, stage size and the number of seats. The findings of the study were as follows: First, as for stage form, an arena is proper when the motion and direction of traditional dance are taken into consideration. Second, regarding stage size, a arena stage that is nine meters in both width and length is recommendable. Third, a mid-sized theater that is smaller than regular mid-sized theaters and has three to five hundred seats is suitable when it has a arena of that size. An audience will be able to enjoy the best traditional dance performances when the type of theater that is presented in the conclusion of the study is prepared.
