Abstract

In the history of Christian Protestant missions in China, no issue was more controversial than translating the term for God into Chinese in their polytheistic religious context. In the New Testament translation committee of the Delegates' Version in 1847, a sharpe debate, known as the ‘Term Controversy,’ broke out. Whereas two American missionaries argued for Shen (a generic term for god), three London Missionary Society (hereafter LMS) missionaries claimed Shang-Tee, the highest deity of the Chinese ancient religion. As a result, this controversy caused them to publish two separate editions - ‘Delegates Version (Shang Tee)’ and ‘Bridgman-Culbertson Version (Shen).’ On the other hand, it led the LMS missionaries to an intensive research on the Chinese religions, so that they perceived the Chinese religions not as an obstacle to the Christian mission but as the ‘preparation’ for the Chinese in leading them to the Christianity. From 1877 to 1887, John Ross (United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, hereafter UPCS) translated the first Korean Bible on the basis of the Delegates' Version, and there he rendered God as Hananim, the highest deity of the Korean shamanism, on the basis of Shang Tee, perceiving Hananim as the point of contact with the God of Christianity. During 1879 to 1881, as Ross contacted James Legge, professor of Chinese studies in Oxford University, in his furlough in Britain, Ross was influenced by Legg in regard to his translation of the Korean term for God as Hananim in his first Korean Bible Version (hereafter KBV). As the American missionaries began to set their feet in Korea from 1884 onwards, they took a lead of the Korea mission including the translation of Scripture. Forming the translation committees, they translated many versions with various terms. This resulted in the ‘Term Controversy’ in Korea too. However, as Hananim had been consistently preferred, other terms gradually disappeared. As a result, solving the ‘Term Controversy,’ the American missionaries eventually made an agreement to affirm Hananim in the 1906 and 1911 Authorized KBV (hereafter AKBV) by the fulfillment theology, which led them to perceive Hananim as the point of contact with the monotheistic God of Christianity at the turn to the twentieth century. This paper argues that, first, the term Hananim and its monotheistic meaning in the 1906 and 1911 AKBV stem from Shang Tee in the Delegates' Version by the LMS missionaries. Second, the monotheistic meaning of Shang Tee had been transferred to Hananim by Ross in 1882 when he rendered Hananim on the basis of Shang Tee in his first KBV, and it had been embedded in Hananim since then. Third, the monotheistic meaning of Hananim was outwardly re-emerged to the American missionaries when they affirmed Hananim as the monotheistic term for God in the 1906 and 1911 AKBV by the propulsive influence of the fulfillment theology at the turn to the twentieth century. Lastly, this paper demonstrates that the term Shang Tee and its monotheistic meaning in the Delegates' Version contributed, whether directly or indirectly, to the proliferation of the early Korean Church, because the term Hananim stem from Shang Tee and Shang Tee itself as the term for God in the Chinese Bible and Korean-Chinese Bible for the high-educated Korean people played an important role in enabling Koreans to find a mirror to their own true god in the Christian religion as the pont of contact with the God of Christianity.
