한국기독교역사연구소의 기독교 기관 연구: 성격, 동향, 그리고 과제

한국기독교역사연구소는 신학적-학문적 에큐메니즘(ecumenism)을 지향하는 학문 공동체다. 처음부터 연구소 참여자들이 공유했던 학문적 가치관의 중심은 민족이다. 민족이라는 중심 가치관은 한국기독교역사연구소를 다른 기독교 역사 관련 연구소나 학회와 구별되게 하는 가장 큰 요인이다. 민족주의적 관심은 기독교 기관 연구에서도 분명하게 드러났다. 선교사들이 조직하여 초기 한국교회 건설에 중요한 역할을 했던 기관보다 일본강점기 동안 민족주의적 활동을 했던 단체와 기관이 집중적으로 조명받았다. 선교사들이 조직했더라도 그들의 의도와는 다르게 기독교 민족운동에 기여했던 단체는 큰 관심의 대상이 될 수 있었다. 해방 이후에는 민족사의 전개과정에서 적극적이고 유의미한 기여를 한 기관들이 부각되었다. 그 중심에 있는 것이 한국기독교교회협의회였다. 세계교회협의회에 대한 연구소의 관심도 같은 맥락에서 이해할 수 있다. 이들과 함께 많이 다루어진 주제는 청년·학생 관련된 기관이다. 각종 학교, YMCA(YWCA), 그리고 각종 기독교 청년·학생 단체가 조명되었다.
Abstract
The Institute of the History of Christianity in Korea (hereafter IHC) is an academic community oriented toward theological-academic ecumenism. From the onset, the center of the academic values shared by its participants has been nation and nationalism, which distinguished it from other Christian academic institutions and societies. IHC’s interest in nation(alism) were also evident in its study of Christian institutions. It showed more interest in organizations and institutions that carried out nationalist activities during the Japanese colonial period than institutions organized by missionaries and played important roles in early Korean church construction. For the post-liberation period, Christian institutions which actively and meaningfully contributed to the development of national history have been intensely studied. At the center of the IHC’s research of Christian institutions was the National Council of Churches in Korea. The Institute’s interest in the World Council of Churches can be understood in the same context. Other organizations and institutions that the IHC showed much interest were youth and student-related institutions, including various schools, YMCA and YWCA, and other Christian youth-student organizations.
