Sense of Community is essential for sustainable rural tourism, and Social Capital—through trust, networks, norms, and participation—strengthens emotional bonds and collective identity. This study empirically analyzes the influence of social capital on community consciousness in rural tourism areas and whether leadership plays a controlling role in the relationship between social capital and community consciousness, and through this, it has an important meaning in improving the community consciousness of local residents and promoting the development of the rural tourism industry. (Design/methodology/approach) This Using survey data from residents of Hongqiqu Village in the Hongqi Canal Scenic Area (Linzhou, Henan), this study applied SPSS 27 to test the effects of Social Capital and the moderating influence of Leadership. (Findings) Social Capital significantly enhances Sense of Community, and all four of its dimensions positively correlate with belonging, satisfaction, and emotional intimacy. Leadership further strengthens this relationship, especially among those in community leadership roles. (Research implications or Originality) This research contributes to rural tourism development by clarifying the mechanisms linking Social Capital, Leadership, and Sense of Community. Trust, network, norms, and participation, each dimension of social capital, all showed significant positive correlations with belonging, satisfaction, and emotional intimacy, which are sub-dimensions of community consciousness. The findings offer theoretical and practical insights for building resilient communities and advancing sustainable tourism strategies.
