Abstract
This study aimed to classify the upper frontal torso and breast morphologies of Korean middle-aged women (aged 40–59 years) to design body shapers using three-dimensional body scan anthropometric data. A factor analysis of 29 upper body and breast-related measurements identified six key factors: upper body front size and breast volume, breast and upper body front proportion, upper body front length and breast position, breast projection and cup size, upper body front height, and nipple distance. Based on these factors, a cluster analysis identified three distinct thoracic body types: small and wide-set breasts, medium-sized ptotic breasts, and large and high-projection breasts. Each type demonstrated characteristic differences in breast size, volume, projection, sagging, nipple spacing, and upper-body front structure, reflecting variations in the morphology of both the breast and surrounding thoracic region. Age-related trends indicated decreases in breast height and volume, and more pronounced sagging. Unlike conventional two-dimension measurement based classifications, this study offers a multidimensional and precise classification of the upper frontal torso and breast morphology using three-dimensional body scan anthropometric data. These results provide valuable foundational data for the design and development of functional innerwear, such as body shapers, sports bras, and brassieres, supporting cus- tomized product design that accounts for age related changes in body shape.
