非武裝地帶 근처 臨津江 상류에서 발견된 溶岩層을 비롯한 臨津江과 漢灘江 일대에 분포하는 第4期 玄武岩은 主元素, 微量元素 및 稀土類元素의 組成에 있어서 기본적으로 동일하다. 溶岩 자체에 대한 K-Ar 측정치의 불확실성에도 불구하고, 溶岩層 直下의 堆積層에 대한 年代測定은 溶岩 噴出이 플라이스토世 중기의 종식 무렵 있었음을 확인시켜 준다. 溶岩層 위의 堆積層에 대한 일련의 年代測定 결과는 堆積層이 수십만 년 전부터 형성되기 시작했을 가능성이 낮으며, 플라이스토世 후기에 쌓였을 것임을 시사해 준다.
Abstract
Quaternary basalt deposits distributed along the Imjin and Hantan River, including those found nearby the DMZ, demonstrate basically the same chemical composition. Despite uncertainties surrounding K-Ar dates obtained from the main body of the basalt, dating of the deposit immediately below the basalt supports the conclusion that volcanic eruption occurred during the terminal Middle Pleistocene. Results of a series of dating suggest that sedimentation on top of the basalt plain began not several hundred thousand years ago but throughout the Upper Pleistocene.
