Abstract
Nāḍī is one of the core ideas of theory of subtle body in Haṭha Yoga. This idea occupies an important status in the theory and practice of Haṭha Yoga. In this school, nāḍī generally represents a subtle channel through which vāyu circulates. In this paper, focusing on the ideas of nāḍī in Ṣaṭcakranirūpaṇā and Kālīcaraṇa’s annotations of this text, we compared and analyzed these ideas with those of four texts of Haṭha Yoga. These four are Śivasaṃhitā, Haṭhapradīpikā, Śivasvarodaya, Yuktabhavadeva. As a result of this study, most of the views are that the total number of nāḍī is approximately 350,000, starting point of all nāḍīs is kanda, and no matter how many nāḍīs there are, only a limited number of nāḍīs are important. It is said that they are generally fourteen: suṣumṇā, iḍā, piṅgalā, gāndhārī, hastijihvā, kuhū, sarasvatī, pūṣā, śaṅkhinī, payasvinī, varuṇī, alambuṣā, viśvodarī, yaśasvinī. Among them, three of them are significantly used in practice of Haṭha Yoga. These are iḍā, piṅgalā and suṣumṇā. Among them, suṣumṇā(central channel) is considered the most important. Suṣumṇā exists along the spine. Iḍā and piṅgalā are on the left and right sides of central channel and go to the left and right nostrils from kanda respectively. The remaining eleven nāḍīs also start in kanda and spread to various parts of the body. Suṣumṇā, like other nāḍīs, begins in kanda, but only this channel reaches brahmarandhra, located in the top of the head(fontanelle) which is the gateway to unity with Brahman. According to Ṣaṭcakranirūpaṇa there are three nāḍīs within central channel. This is a view that cannot often be seen in other texts. These three nāḍīs are vajra, citriṇī and brahma. Vajra is within suṣumṇā, citriṇī within it, brahma within it again. These become subtler sequentially as they go inside. Among them, brahma nāḍī plays role as a true passage, in other words kuṇḍalinī enters brahmadvāra and ascends to brahmarandhra. In the rest of the texts except for Ṣaṭcakranirūpaṇa, it is not clearly revealed that other nāḍīs exist within suṣumṇā: the systematized idea of the structure of central channel.
