Abstract

The BupJeongSa anti-Japanese movement was a conflict against Japanese colonial rule in Korea organized at BupJeongsa and the JoongMoon area in SeoGwiPo-Si on JeJu Island. Because this movement had remained untouched by researchers for a long time, there was not much known about it until recently. For the last ten years, however, the research into this matter has been paid great attention , and as a result of this focused study many aspects of its whole picture have been revealed. The BupJeongSa anti-Japanese movement is now considered the most active armed anti-Japanese movement in the 1910s and also symbolizes all the resistance movements to Japan in JeJu Island. This conflict started from a Buddhist temple called BupJeongSa at the JoongMoon area in SeoGwiPo-Si. Many Buddhist monks including YounYil Kim led this and 700 local residents gathered to join it. Although this conflict was put down by the Japanese army, its peculiar features as the national and religious movement is worth great attention. The SeoGwiPo local government started a project to make the setting of the conflict into the sacred ground and accomplished it within ten years. Through this project, the BupJeongSa anti-Japanese movement can now be recognized as a historical fact that symbolizes JeJuDo resistance movement to Japan. This article organized and reveiwed the results, limitations, and future research directions of the study about the BupJeongSa anti-Japanese movement. The research on the BupJeongSa movement will be expected to be more intensified through these review and outlook.
