제주불교는 제주4.3항쟁에 적극 참여하였다. 이러한 제주불교의 제주사회 참여 활동은 제주불교 승려들의 사회 인식과 제주도민들의 시대적 인식에 따른 활동과 그 흐름을 같이하는 것이다. 제주도는 해방으로 한국사회의 흐름을 따라 친일을 반성하고 새로운 나라를 건설하기 위한 활동으로 들끓었다. 신탁과 반탁의 사회적 혼란 상황에서 자신들의 의지를 수행하기 위한 활동에 동참하고 있었다. 제주도에서는 남한만의 단독정부 수립을 반대하며 5.10선거를 거부하기 위한 활동에 들어갔다. 제주불교도 제주사회의 이러한 흐름 속에서 제주도민과 함께 활동하는 모습을 보인다. 제주불교의 승려 이일선은 제주도민주주의민족전선 활동에 앞장섰고 승려 이세진은 제주4.3항쟁에서 무장대 지도부로 활동하였다. 승려들의 이러한 사회 참여 활동은 제주불교가 제주사회의 현안에 적극 참여하였던 모습의 일부이다. 제주불교교무원 차원의 제주사회 활동 동참 모습도 포착된다. 제주불교의 중심지였던 관음사는 제주4.3항쟁의 관음사전투 격전지가 되며 사찰 건물이 모두 불태워지고 군 숙영지와 초소 등을 건설해 놓아 군 주둔지로 활용되었다. 관음사는 사찰로서의 종교 활동 자체가 불가능하였고 이는 제주불교 사찰의 다수에 해당되는 상황이었다. 제주4.3항쟁으로 인한 제주불교의 이러한 수난은 모두 제주불교가 제주사회 활동에 적극 참여하였기 때문에 빚어진 결과이다. 제주불교를 이끌던 주요 승려의 인명 피해는 제주불교의 오랜 후유증이 되었으며, 사찰 건물 등의 피해 또한 재건하는데 오랜 시간이 걸렸다.
Abstract
Jeju Buddhism actively participated in Jeju 4.3 Resistance in cooperation with Jeju civilians. It reflected that the Buddhist monks in Jeju were aware of the societal issues and shared the interests of civic movements at that time. In fact, social activism in Jeju thrived with the collective aspiration of new autonomous nation-state in the Jeju 4.3 periods. After Japanese colonialism was disassembled, these social movements were developed in the response of the chaos from the political division of whether to approve the trusteeship arrangement of Korea by United States and Soviet Union. The boycott of 5.10 election in Jeju was the representative case of social activism against establishing the single government of South Korea. Jeju Buddhism also got alignment with civilians and supported these activist movements of Jeju society. We can confirm the activist attitude of Jeju Buddhism during Jeju 4.3 period, through the social activities of Buddhist monks in Jeju. Yi Il-seon was one of representative figure who actviely engaged in Democartic National Front of Jeju-do. Furthermore, Yi Se-jin engaged in the leadership of armed guerrilla for Jeju 4.3 Resistance. Jeju Buddhist Office of Religious Affairs also supported the social activities in Jeju area. However, Gwaneumsa was completely devastated by the fierce battle of Jeju 4.3 Resistance, and it lost its central role of Jeju Buddhism. After all the temple buildings was incinerated by scorched-earth operation, the site of Gwaneumsa was appropriated as a military camp with guard posts and billeting places. On that account, the religious activities of Gwaneumsa was not possible. Futhermore, most Buddhist temples suffered from similar damaging situation of Gwaneumsa. Owing to the activist attitude of Buddhists in Jeju 4.3 Resitiance, Jeju Buddhism has suffered from lots of casualties including the leading figures of Buddhist community and the extensive damages of temple properties. These aftereffects of Jeju 4.3 still remain ruinous for Jeju Buddhism to restore.
