Abstract

This study examines how the Korean church is preparing to accommodate multicultural families from the perspective of Christian leadership. Leadership theorists emphasize that leading change is the crucial feature of leadership. This research focuses on looking at local churches' preparation for multicultural families and examining how churches can help multicultural families effectively, especially in relation to leadership. First, this study discusses the general understanding of multicultural society and the standard awareness of "marriage immigrants" based on the results of surveys of selected churches. The understanding of multicultural society and "marriage immigrants" among Christians in their twenties is focused on especially. Many Christians in their twenties think Korea is still a ethnically homogenous society, and this age group is prouder of this fact than any other age group. Also, Christians in their twenties are less willing than other age groups to help "marriage immigrants" settle down in Korean society. Second, the Christians in their twenties face obstacles to developing multicultural sensitivities in that they feel a much stronger cultural exclusivism and intolerance to multicultural families than other groups, and they also show authoritarianism and ethnocentrism. Furthermore, the results of the surveys show that Christians in their twenties meet multicultural families half as often as other age groups. Finally, to develop a multicultural sense in Christians in their twenties in view of Christian leadership, we need to stress a change of perspective in young Christians in regard to multicultural society and families. We must also teaching the Korean people at large about how to understand the Other. It is also important to develop a strong sense of community to share a sense of vulnerability with multicultural families. This study will be a chance to reflect on raising Christians in their twenties with a multicultural identity who will be able to contribute in the future when the church serves underprivileged multicultural families.
