본 연구는 최근 언론에 보도되는 개신교 신앙공동체 내부의 심각한 갈등과 분쟁, 신앙공동체와 구성원들의 배타성, 공격성, 이분법적 성향의 문제를 목격하면서, 신앙공동체의 평화와 성숙을 이루기 위하여 목회상담이 어떤 역할을 할 수 있을지에 대해서 고민하면서 그 방안으로 상담적 직면과 신학적 성찰이 동시에 필요함을 제안하였다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 신앙공동체의 평화와 성숙의 의미를 한국어, 히브리어, 희랍어 단어의 사전적 정의와 사회문화적, 신학적 의미를 탐구했고, 제임스 W. 파울러의 신앙발달단계이론을 이용하여 정의하였다. 기독교 신앙공동체 초기의 갈등과 분쟁의 현상에 대해서는 바울서신 고린도전서에 나타난 고린도교회의 상황을 분석함으로써 분쟁의 원인이 신앙의 미성숙의 문제, 신앙정체성 형성의 부족 문제임을 확인하였다. 현재 한국의 개신교 신앙공동체의 갈등과 분쟁의 원인으로는 신앙공동체의 지도자와 구성원의 심리적 문제와 신앙발달/성숙이 지연된 신학적 문제가 함께 상호 연관되어 공존함을 지적하였는데, 특히 나르시시즘 성향의 목회자/평신도 지도자와 경계선 성향의 신앙공동체 구성원들이 겪는 어려움이 신앙공동체의 갈등과 미성숙의 문제에 원인이 됨을 강조하였다. 본 논문에서는 현재 한국사회의 개신교 공동체의 갈등과 미성숙의 문제가 심리적, 신학적 원인이 공존하기 때문에, 평화와 성숙을 이루기 위한 구체적인 방법도 심리(상담)적, 신학적 전략이 공존해야 함을 제안하였다. 특히, 상담적 방법으로는 직면(confrontation)을, 신학적 방법으로는 신학적 성찰(theological reflection)을 제안하였는데 두 가지 방법 모두 나르시시즘, 경계선 성향의 공동체 지도자와 구성원들이 공존하는 개신교 신앙공동체에서는 실천하기에 매우 어렵지만 반드시 필요한 과정임을 신앙공동체의 예를 들어 설명하고 강조하였다. 신앙공동체는 공동체이면서 신앙을 하는(faithing) 공동체이기 때문에 신학적 성찰과 질문이 부재한 신앙공동체는 신앙정체성, 존재 이유와 목적, 의미를 분명히 하는 과정이 평화와 성숙을 경험하게 되는 길임을 강조하였다.
Abstract
This research is to suggest confrontation and theological reflection as necessary strategies in order to facilitate peace and maturation of Protestant faith communities in Korea. Recently, there have been so many media news reports about serious conflict and divisions within Protestant faith communities in Korea, as well as exclusivity, aggression, and dichotomous perspectives of faith communities and their members. In this article, I explored the meanings of peace and maturation in light of literal definitions in Korean, Greek, Hebrew words and sociocultural and theological interpretations of peace and maturation. In defining the meaning of maturation, I also employed James W. Fowler's faith development theory. In order to take a closer look at conflicts and divisions in early Christian community, I reviewed and analyzed conflict within the Corithian Church described in 1 Corinthians. Out of analysis, I found out that the major reasons of conflict and division were the problems of immaturity in their Christian faith and the lack of the strong sense of identity as Christians. Similarly, the major reasons of conflict and division in Korean Protestant faith communities are the combination of both psychological difficulties and spiritual immaturity, especially narcissistic and borderline tendencies of clergy, lay leaders, and lay members. In this article, I suggested that there must be both psychological and theological strategies in order to facilitate peace and maturation of Protestant faith communities. One is confrontation and the other one is theological reflection. Both strategies are not easy to actually practice to leaders and members with narcissistic and borderline tendencies, but those two methods are necessary steps for bringing peace and maturation of faith community. Confirming identity, reason and purpose of existence, and the meaning of a faith community is a way to experience peace and maturation because a faith community is a 'faithing' community.
