Abstract

This research deals with the subject regarding the rite of “divine healing,” which is one important statement of fourfold Gospel, four valuable titles in Christian doctrine in Korean Evangelical Holiness Church. Many Korean Christians and ministers understand that divene healing is curing from physical diseases by the power of the Holy Spirit, as well as this would be possible by the limited person who received the spiritual gift. If, however, the definition of divine healing is restricted as recovery of physical illness, one might ignore God’s grace in divine healing to sustain God’s creatures’ wholeness and to restore them from unfaithfulness. In addition, this restricted definition of divine healing might increase the risk that the Christians shape the extreme faith to expect supernatural power, only. In this research, however, does not deny the power of therapeutic power of the Holy Spirit. Rather, the target of this paper aims to research how the liturgy expects divine healing of God in our daily lives. Pursuing the target of this research, this paper deals the wider theological definition of divine healing as well as historical development and ritual methods of the rite of divine healing for the sick to be cured and restored by God‘s grace in Christian history, and shape the suitable rite of divine healing for Korean Evangelical Holiness Church in the twenty-first century. This research is shaped to achieve the targets of research as following process: First, I deal with the definition of divine healing based on historical and theological research. This part includes the understanding of divine healing described in the Biblical texts as well as that of John Wesley, who is the theological root of Korean Evangelical Holiness Church, and the holiness movement in the nineteenth century. In addition, the understandings of divine healing of Korean Evangelical Holiness Church since the early mission period to now. This research uses historical evidences and theological analysis. Second, I research the rite of divine healing for the sick in the Christian history. The historical research has been used to understand the shape and transformation of the rite of divine healing. Especially, the documents such as request of praying and anointing for the sick in James 5, The Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus, and other early Christian rite for sick of John Chrysostom and others are researched. Through these materials, one can understand how the rite of divine healing for the sick had been settled in Christian liturgy as well as how this liturgy had been developed during medieval era. I also deal with how the reformation had changed this rite of divine healing, and how modern Christianity shape their own rite of divine healing. For this process, researching the historical materials were used as main method. Third, I evaluate the rite of divine healing of Korean Evangelical Holiness Church shaped in 2016, and give some suggestions to develop more pastoral and local-kind rite based on the wider meaning of divine healing.
