기호학과 기독교교육 - 퍼스의 삼중적 기호이해와 성서교수학적 성찰 -

본 연구는 현대 기호학의 설립자 중 한 사람인 찰스 퍼스의 삼중적 기호이해의 관점에서 독일 기독교교육의 대표적인 성서교수학 모델을 성찰함으로써 퍼스의 기호학이 현대 기독교교육의 학문적 성찰에 기여할 수 있는 가능성을 모색하고자 함을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 먼저 퍼스의 기호이론을 삼중적 기호구조를 중심으로 살펴본다. 퍼스에 따르면, 모든 인간의 사유 행위는 기호를 통해서 이루어진다. 인간을 둘러싸고 있는 모든 현실 세계는 기호체계로 이루어져있기 때문에 인간은 어떤 사물이나 대상을 직접적으로 인식하지 못하고 언제나 기호를 통해서 간접적으로 인식한다. 인간은 기호로 지각하고, 생각하고, 말하는 존재다. 특별히 퍼스는 기호를 삼중적 관계구조로 이해한다. 즉, 퍼스는 주체-객체, 또는 인식자와 인식대상이라고 하는 인식의 이중구조를 넘어서 표상체-대상체-해석체의 삼중적 구조로 기호를 바라본다. 모든 사고의 의미는, 대상을 규정하는 기호로써 사고를 해석하는 삼중적 관계에 의해서 확립되는 것이다. 이어서 본 연구는 이중적으로 환원된 기호이해의 문제점을 살펴봄으로써 퍼스의 기호이해가 현대 학문을 위한 반성의 틀을 제시할 수 있다는 점을 제시한다. 퍼스 기호학의 삼중적 구조는 의미생산의 원심력과 구심력의 조화를 추구한다고 할 수 있으며, 진리의 소통과 확장을 지향하면서도 진리의 본질을 진지하게 생각한다그리고 퍼스의 삼중적 기호이해에 근거하여 20세기에 있었던 독일의 대표적인 성서교수학 모델, 즉 선포모델, 해석모델, 경험모델을 살펴보고 그 모델들이 기호학적 측면에서 이중적으로 환원된 기호이해에 근거하고 있음을 지적한다. 첫째, 기호가 표상체와 대상체의 관계로 환원될 때, 기호의 문법적 기능이 강조되어 교조적이고 일방적인 형태로 나타나게 된다. 둘째, 기호의 대상체와 해석체의 관계로 환원될 때, 기호는 의미론적 측면으로 강화되고 구체성을 상실한 일반화된 의미를 제공하는 것으로 그칠 수 있다. 셋째, 기호가 표상체와 해석체의 관계로 환원될 때, 기호는 화용론적 측면으로 강화되고 보편성에 대한 부분이 약화되면서 다원적, 실용적 측면으로 도구화되는 양상을 띠게 된다. 결국 각 성서교수학 모델의 문제점은 간과된 기호측면에 주목할 때 보완될 수 있을 것이다. 그런 점에서 퍼스의 삼중적 기호이론은 기독교교육 이론의 정립을 위한 성찰의 틀걸이로 작용할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This investigation is a semiotic reflection on the contemporary religious didactic models, especially with regard to the three-dimensional semiotic theory of the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. It is recognized worldwide that Peirce is one of the most important founders of modern semiotics and that his theory of sign still plays a fundamental role in today’s semiotic work. According to Peirce, every thought is a sign. All the world around humans consists of sign systems, so that people communicate with each other through the mediation of the sign. In particular, he sees characters in a triadic structure between representamen, object and interpretant and in relation to the infinite semiotic process of three. In this semiotic process are pairs of forces, or centrifugal and centripetal force of the semiotic process. In their centrifugal and centripetal process, religious communication activates itself as well as distances itself from the false extremization tendency of our communication. Reflecting on the three religious educational models of the twentieth century, in other words, the proclamative model, the hermeneutical model and the empirical model in terms of the triadic semiotic theory, I find out that each of them has been reduced to a distinct two-dimensional structure of representamen and object, object and interpretant, or representamen and interpretant. In the religious didactical reduction of the representamen and object of the sign, a fundamentalist and authoritarian didactic form emerges, in which the grammatical perspective of the sign is overemphasized. When it is reduced to the religious didactical aspect of the object and interpretant of the sign, an abstracted semantic form emerges that loses the dynamics of concrete signs. In the didactical reduction of representamen and interpretant of the sign without reference to its object, a functionalized didactical form emerges, which is mainly about the pluralistic and pragmatic character of the sign and therefore the areas of tension of the question of truth are marginalized. It will be noted that the triadic semiotic process can offer an important measure or perspective for religious didactics.
