초록
The waterfalls are identified that stream water fall down along nearly vertical rock face at knickpoint which steep point of longitudinal profile of stream. This study attempted types classification of waterfalls and suggested typical cases on Korea and the United States. The types of waterfalls classified as 1) falls by differential erosions, 2) falls by channel avulsion, 3) falls by marine erosions and sea level changes, 4) falls by glacial erosions, 5) falls by tectonic movements, 6) falls by karst processes, based on geomorphological formation factors. When they are based on sectional form, waterfalls classified as 1) hanging falls, 2) free falls, 3) slide falls, 4) tumbling, 5) cascade. Waterfalls are mostly appeared as hanging falls and cascade by differential erosion due to differences of rock hardness in the United State. Whereas they are mostly appeared as free and slide falls by differential erosion due to differences of geological structure in Korea.
