이 연구는 아직 어린이(아동)세례를 시행하지 않는 대한예수교 장로교회의 현행 성례제도에 그 필요성을 강조하기 위한 것이다. 유아세례 이후 성인세례 사이에 있는 이들을 위한 어린이(아동)세례의 세계교회의 현황을 살펴보면서 신학적 논점과 시행에 따른 고려할 요소들에 대해 논한다. 이 교회는 유아세례 관습은 유지해오고 있지만 유아 이후 입교까지의 연령층에 해당하는 아동들은 성례전적 과정에서 제외되어 왔다. 현재 한국의 주요 장로교회들은 만 2세까지의 유아세례만을 허용하고 있기 때문에 만2세 이후의 아동들이 세례를 받기 위해서는 성인 세례 연령 자격인 15세까지 기다려야하는 상황이다. 이러한 성례전 관습이 형성된 이유에 대한 역사적 논쟁이나 신학적 근거를 찾아보기 어려울 뿐만 아니라, 13년이란 기간 동안 성례전과 관련한 목회적 지침이나 교육을 찾아보기 어렵다는데 문제가 있다. 그동안 목회 현장에서 이 기간에 해당하는 자녀를 가진 부모들이 세례에 관한 요청이나 문의가 있을 때마다, 성서적이고 신학적인 답변보다는 교단 전통과 헌법을 전해주는 정도로 대해왔다. 20세기 중엽부터 세계 주요 교단들이 이러한 요청에 대한 응답으로 아동세례 제도를 도입해오고 있는 것을 살펴보면 어린이(아동)세례는 더 이상 미룰 수 없는 중요한 성례예식이라는 판단이 선다. 세계의 각 교회들이 어린이(아동)세례 도입을 위해 오랜 기간 신학적 연구를 통해 논의한 준거들을 보면, 더욱 그렇다. 하나님의 계약의 백성을 향한 절대적 은총의 선물인 유아세례를 보존해온 개혁교회 전통에서 어린이(아동)세례를 금하고 있었다는 것이 적절하지 않는 것으로 보인다. 신학적 근거나 목회적 통찰이나 고려 없이 전통을 답습해온 것에 대해 그 원인을 규명해보고 이제 세계 교회의 변화와 그들의 통찰을 겸허히 수렴해가는 자세가 필요하다. 어린이(아동)세례는 이미 통합교단에서 시행하고 있는 지적(발달)장애인 세례에서처럼 하나님의 백성들의 자녀들이 그들의 나이와 믿음의 수준에서 하나님의 풍성한 은총을 누릴 수 있도록 허용되어야 한다. 작년에 통합측 총회에서 허락된 유아세례자 성찬에 이어서 어린이(아동)세례의 시행은 회중들에게는 그리스도인의 성례전적 삶을 더욱 적극적으로 살 수 있게 하고, 목회자들에게는 성도들의 구원의 여정을 성례전적으로 안내할 수 있는 목회적 환경을 제공해줄 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to propose to add child baptism, the rite of Christian Initiation for children, to the initiation system of the Presbyterian church in Korea. Most Presbyterian churches in Korea only perform adult baptism and infant baptism for children under two years of age. So children over two years old must wait until they are 15 years old in order to be baptized. This sacramental custom has no certain biblical or theological basis and does not give any pastoral guidance for those who are willing to nourish their spiritual life according to sacramental process. Since the beginning of the 21st century, many protestant churches, including the churches belonging to the reformed tradition, have discussed this issue, and as a result, added child baptism to their sacramental system. What the research committees of the churches focused and emphasized in these discussions was God’s grace and covenant toward God’s people rather than people’s faith and confession. This could be considered timely preparation for discussing child baptism in the presbyterian church in Korea, which has already included baptism for those with intellectual disabilities in its worship book. Moreover this year the general assembly of the church has approved the celebration of the Supper of those who received infant baptism but do not yet confess their faith because they are under the age of 15. This decision might naturally move to serious discussions of child baptism. Child baptism must be approved like baptism for people with intellectual disabilities, which is already included in the worship book of PCK, in order that the children of people of God might enjoy God’s plentiful grace in all their ages and faith levels. This new rite will bring active sacramental life to every generation of the congregation and will foster a pastoral environment which can guide the journey of salvation of congregation to pastors.
