본고의 목적은 사회, 문화적으로 큰 변화를 겪고 있는 미국 사회에서 다양한 대상들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 노력하는 미국연합감리교회의 최근 교회개척전략을 연구하여, 한국교회 미래 선교적 교회개척에 대안을 제시하고자 하는 것이다. 미국 교회는 ‘후기 기독교 사회’, ‘탈 교회시대’, 그리고 ‘소비문화’를 경험하면서 여러 변화에 직면하고 있다. 미연합감리교회는 최근 ‘소비문화시대’에 인간 중심의 ‘소비자 기독교’(Consumer Christianity)를 극복하기 위해서 건강한 교회론을 가지고 웨슬리안적 선교적 교회개척을 실천하기 위해 노력한다. 즉, 감리교를 시작한 존 웨슬리가 교회의 숫자적인 성장보다는 교회의 본질인 성서적 성결을 위해 노력하고 건강한 대안 공동체를 만들기 위해 노력했던 것처럼 연합감리교회도 건강한 교회개척에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 2010년 이후에 미연합감리교회 교회개척의 형태는 그 수가 크게 성장하고 있는 ‘믿음도 없고’(no believing), ‘교회 소속되어 있지 않은’(no belonging) ‘교회에 관심이 없는 사람들’(unchurched people)과 ‘믿음은 있는데’(believing) ‘교회 소속되어 있지 않은’(no belonging) ‘가나안 교인들’(dechurched people)의 전도를 위해 작지만 건강한 교회 그리고 총제적 성결을 실천하는 선교적 교회 모델들의 개척 수가 가파르게 성장하고 있다. 아직까지 연합감리교회 교회개척 패러다임 전환의 성공을 속단하기는 이르지만, 필자는 미국 교회와 비슷하게 탈 교회 시대를 경험하고 있는 한국교회의 미래 선교, 전도, 그리고 교회개척을 위해 미국의 예가 도움을 줄 수 있다고 믿는다. 기존에 한국교회는 ‘전통적 교회개척’만 고수했지만 다양한 전도대상자들에게 나아가기 위해서 미국연합감리교회의 교회개척전략을 연구하고 선교적 상상력을 가져보길 제안한다. 예를 들면, 연합감리교회는 ‘새로운 사람들을 위한 새로운 그룹들’(New Groups for New People), ‘새로운 사람들을 위한 새로운 신앙 공동체들’(New Faith Communities for New People), 그리고 ‘새로운 사람들을 위한 새로운 교회들’(New Churches for New People)이라는 3가지 교회개척 전략을 가지고 구체적으로 ‘교회의 새로운 표현들’(Fresh Expressions of Church), 선교적 모델, 신수도원주의, 멀티사이트 모델, 그리고 전통적/매혹적 모델등 다양한 교회개척을 실천하고 있다. 이 모델들은 변화하는 사회에서 한국교회 미래 교회개척 발전에 좋은 예들이 될 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to propose the new church planting strategy for future of the Korean Church by exploring the new church models of the United Methodist Church(UMC). The North American Church now is confronting cultural and social transitions in the post-Christian and post-Church society. Recently, UMC attempts to overcome ‘Consumer Christianity’ that is a human-centered mindset by focusing on healthy ecclesiology. John Wesley who is a founder of the Methodist Church is not establish the Church for only getting numerical growth but for pursuing biblical holiness as an alternative community. In order to follow John Wesley’s evangelical heritage, UMC is trying to make healthy church communities by practicing Wesleyan missional church planting. As post-Christendom develops in North America, the vast majority of people are probably neither belong nor believe who are called by ‘unchurched people’ and ‘dechurched people’, who are believing Christ Jesus but no longer belonging to the churches, are exponentially growing in the postmodern North American society. UMC encourages their local churches, pastors, and church planters to evangelize unchurched and dechurched people who are no longer trusting in the Church. Since 2010, the missional church planting movement has been grown by practicing holistic (personal and social) holiness together at the United Methodist Church. The Korean Church is also facing difficulties of mission and evangelism in our postmodern society that is no longer interested in Christianity, and then we also need to reach out unchurched and dechurched people for God’s mission. UMC has three main church planting strategies, which are ‘New Groups for New People’, ‘New Faith Communities for New People’, and ‘New Churches for New People’, by focusing on contextualization. These church planting strategies are strategically practicing ‘New Monasticism’ that origins in the monastic tradition, ‘Missional models’ that are inspired by the missional church movement in North America, ‘Fresh Expressions of Church’ that is started from the Church of England, and others. I deal with these various church plating models that UMC is practicing to provide missional insights and imaginations for the Korean churches future mission and evangelism.
