Abstract
This paper examines the historical process of sharp gender polarization in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. In doing so, the paper is divided into two parts. The first part looks at the construction of gender identity in English culture through her representation of Orlando first as a man and then as a woman. In the second part, Woolf envisions artistically two ways to deconstruct this binary opposition and invents a new gender identity and social relationship in the novel. First, she employs the gypsy life, which evades gender difference and suggests a new kind of gender relationship as being free and communal. Secondly, Woolf also employs androgyny to subvert the logic of gender polarization in the novel. With the androgynous quality, she strives to avoid a separate sex-consciousness of a man or a woman, which leads to destructive self-assertion.
