Abstract
Githa Hariharans The Thousand Faces of Night (1992), winner of the Commonwealth Book Prize for Best First Book of the year, is an exploration by one of Indias leading Indian English women novelists of the ways in which the Hindu woman in modern India (as opposed to women of other religious persuasions in this multi-faith nation) can still use her cultural heritage as an enabling model and symbolic resource for meeting the challenges of the present moment. The story problematizes those inherited messages by locating a contemporary action within a subtextual matrix of allegory. Night demonstrates how goddesses and other paradigmatic women from Hindu myth, legend, hagiography and history may be invoked to inscribe a syncretic identity that is simultaneously rooted and renewed. In this womans book, as Hariharan chose to call it, the ancient narratives function as vehicles for modern knowledge (through interrogation as well as affirmation), as citation functions as a creative strategy to re-articulate the symbiotic relationship between the present and the past.
