Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the alternatives to English hegemony in our globalizing era, from the position of Asian women as a linguistic minority. To do this, first, I attempt to reconceptualize ‘human rights' in terms of language, based upon both Balibar's concept of politics of human rights, whose main point is to reveal and specify sexual difference & elite/subaltern difference and Irigaray's formulation of sexual difference/right and the concept of speaking women (parler femme). This Irigaraian concept is related with, and can be moved into, the realm of feminist rhetoric as ‘speaking as women'. Next, this paper deals with the theoretical horizons and specific methodologies of feminist rhetoric in enlarging the political power of Asian women's (re)telling their differences. Here, the concepts of the inappropriate/d others, marginality, critical negotiation, subversive irony, politicization of personal experience, talk back, and the rhetoric of resistance are discussed. Last, the task of Asian elite women's speaking of subaltern differences in English or local languages is emphasized because it is crucial for confronting and changing the liberalistic or monologic epistemology propagated by the globalization discourses of the Western male/female academy. As a way to do this task, specific alternatives to English hegemony, such as the sustaining of local languages, the subversive reinventing English as englishes, and linguistic localism are presented from Asian women's perspectives of ‘globalization from below’ or subaltern language politics.
