Abstract
The study aims to extract changes in the coastline of Chungnam attributed to the rise in sea level as well as changes in flooding vulnerable areas according to land cover. For these objectives, the study adopted remote sensing and GIS methods to analyze the changes based on the respective IPCC SRES scenarios. As a result of study, it was show that a 0.2m sea level rise caused a 7.5km decrease in the total length of the coastline to 753.4km, while a 0.4m sea level rise increased the total coastline to 755.7km. Results also show that a rise of 0.5m, 0.6m, 1.0m and 2.0m in the sea level enlarged the coastline to 755.8km, 758.9km, 772.6km and up 88.9km to 849.7km, respectively. In terms of the flooding area according to each scenario, a 0.2m sea level rise resulted in 29.0km2, while a 0.4m sea level rise calculated 37.5km2, a 0.5m sea level rise extended the coastline to 41.6km2, a 0.6m sea level rise to 45.5km2, a 1.0m sea level rise to 60.5km2 and a 2.0m sea level rise to 106.1km2. Looking at the affected flooding area according to land cover, a 0.2m rise in sea level appears to have the largest flood lake area at 8.88km2, followed by wetland and urban areas. It also shows that a 0.4m sea level rise scenario caused the lakes to be flood most, followed by wetland and urban areas. On the other hand rise of 0.5m, 0.6m and 1.0m in sea level showed some changes in the areas but caused flooding-related damage in the following order: lakes, wetland and urban areas. A 2.0m rise in sea level, however, manifested flooding-related damage in the following order: lakes, paddy field and wetland. If flooding caused by a rise in sea level occurs in some coastal zones where sea water flooding is under way, the speed and the strength of flooding are expected to be much stronger, thus leading to land loss.
