초록
The Silk Road played an important role as a land-based and seaborne trade route between the East and West since ancient times. The renewed spotlight on the role of the Road in the 21st century, which has been out of use since the 17th century, triggered debates about bringing the trade route to a whole new level. China is implementing a “New Silk Road” strategy, aimed at building an economic belt along the ancient trade path, through which it seeks to establish a Sino-centric traffic and logistics network. Russia, in a bid to check the US and formulate a multilateral international regime, is promoting Neo-eurasianism. The term “New Silk Road” emerged in the process of these discussions, which also entails the concept of an “Energy Silk Road” in reference to an energy supply route. America’s focus on Central Asia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 led to the enactment of the Silk Road Strategy Act in 1995, in a move closely related to its broad strategic interest spanning from the Mediterranean Sea to Central Asia. In light of these considerations, this article analyses the implications of the US Silk Road strategy and the oil pipeline project in TAPI (Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan – India) and examines Iran’s role in energy geopolitics.
