Abstract
During the early half period of the Joseon dynasty, there was a tradition of constructing pavilions and towers(樓) inside not only royal palaces, but also residences of the royal family members and houses of other ordinary Yangban figures. Constructing storied pavilions(層樓) and towers for residence purposes had been an age-old custom since the Goryeo dynasty period. During the Joseon dynasty period, It seems that it was only allowed for the royal palaces and residences of the royal family members to be constructed entirely in the fashion of storied pavilions and towers. And for other ordinary residences, generally the side-wing(Ikrang/翼廊) structures adjacent to the main sections of the residences were constructed in the fashion of storied pavilions and towers. These side-wing structures constructed in a storied-pavilion fashion were referred to as Nae-ru/內樓 structures. In other words, the inner tower of the pavilion. And the second stories of these structures were used as bedroom chambers. It is essential to consider this kind of residence fashion that prevailed during the early half period of the Joseon dynasty, which showed storied pavilions and towers for residence purposes as part of it, to have been part of the classic fashions of construction at the time. It will also help us properly inherit and honor this classic fashion in an original and practical way.
