Abstract

This study aims to reconsider the concept, scope, and literary-historical status of Buddhist fiction, which has long remained peripheral in Korean literary historiography, by closely examining the distribution and compilation of Buddhist narrative fiction written in classical Chinese during the late Joseon dynasty. The first section reviews earlier historiographical narratives and research trends concerning Buddhist fiction, raising the need to expand the genre’s conceptual boundaries and reevaluate its defining characteristics. Building on this framework, the paper analyzes the structure and manu-script circulation of Buddhist fiction collections such as Jukgibyeoldam(逐機別談) and Jeogyeonghapbu(諸經合部). These texts are shown to be not merely expository commentaries on scripture, but hybrid works that combine narrative appeal with didactic aims, functioning as practical tools for religious instruction and proselytization. The fact that such Buddhist narratives—maintaining the formal characteristics of classical Chinese fiction—were actively transmitted among lay followers as well as in Buddhist venues such as sokgang (popular sermons) and ritual gatherings (jaeui beopseok) highlights the vitality and wide cultural reach of Buddhism in late Joseon society. Through this analysis, the paper argues for a more nuanced and com-prehensive understanding of the transmission and reception of Buddhist fiction in late Joseon. It also suggests that such works invite a reassessment of existing literary classifications and call for a more inclusive revision of the literary history of classical Chinese fiction in Korea. Newly identified texts like Jeogyeonghapbu serve as important evidence in this endeavor, and further discovery and analysis of similar materials will be crucial for future research. This study ultimately seeks to revitalize academic attention to Buddhist fiction and reframe its significance within the broader narrative of premodern Korean literature.
