이용휴 산문에 엿보이는 실학적 관심의 일 단면-養生과 食力을 중심으로-

본고에서는 그동안 개성적 문풍을 구사한 소품문 작가나, 파격적 언어를 구사한 시인으로 다뤄졌던 이용휴를, ‘養生’과 ‘食力(=자기 힘으로 먹고 삶)’이라는 키워드를 통해 새롭게 조명함으로써, 그의 산문에 엿보이는 ‘실학적 관심’의 일단을 탐색해 보고자 했다. 이용휴는 남달리 병약한 유년기를 보냈는데, 이러한 체험은 그가 양생에 대해 유별난 관심을 갖게 되는 계기로 작용했다. 이용휴의 산문에 엿보이는 양생에 대한 관심은 食色으로 대표되는 육체적 욕망을 절제하는 데서 출발하여, 가난에 수반되는 각종 육체적·정신적 고통을 잘 견뎌내는 것까지를 포괄한다. 이용휴의 산문에 나타나는 식력에 대한 관심은 ‘벼슬하지 않는 선비’[處士]로서의 본분을 자각하는 데서 출발한다. 그는 몇몇 산문 작품에서 자기 힘으로 먹고 사는 처사들의 모습을 긍정적으로 그려내는 한편, ‘사회계급적 반성’을 통해 士-農의 중간자적 존재로서 처사의 위치를 규정하고, ‘자연철학적 반성’을 통해 자연의 봉양을 받는 존재로서 인간의 위치를 파악했다. 그리고 그 자신이 직접 식력에 필요한 농경 지식을 얻고자 시도하기도 했다. 본고의 작업을 통해 가난·질병 등의 실존적 체험이 이용휴 문학에 어떻게 반영되었는지 살필 수 있었으며, 성호 이익의 실학사상이 미친 영향도 구체적으로 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper aims to examine Yi Yong-hyu, who has previously been discussed as a writer of short prose with a distinctive literary style or a poet known for his unconventional language, through the keywords of "regimen(養生)" and "self-sustenance (食力: making a living by one's own means)." By doing so, it seeks to explore an aspect of his interests in Silhak(實學, practical knowledge) reflected in his prose. Yi Yong-hyu experienced an exceptionally frail childhood, which led to his profound interest in regimen. His concern with regimen, as seen in his prose, begins with restraining physical desires—such as those represented by food and sex—and extends to enduring the various physical and mental hardships associated with poverty. His interest in self-sustenance, as revealed in his prose, starts from his awareness of himself as a "cheosa"(處士, scholar who does not hold office). In several of his prose works, he portrays the lives of cheosa who sustain themselves with a positive perspective. At the same time, he defines the position of cheosa as intermediaries between scholars(士) and farmers(農) through a "socio-class reflection" and understands humanity's place as beings dependent on nature through a "natural-philosophical reflection." Furthermore, he personally attempted to acquire agricultural knowledge necessary for self-sustenance. Through this study, we can examine how existential experiences such as poverty and illness were reflected in Yi Yong-hyu's writing, and specifically analyze the influence of Seongho Yi Ik's Silhak thoughts on his works.
