Abstract

This is a case study in which the relation between water management and the traditional farming method is discussed, particularly in dry-field farming in a mountainous agricultural village, gyeongsangbuk-do. Although dry-field farming is not considered water-dependent generally, the fact is that it is closely related with water in terms of the soil characteristics, how to cultivate the field, crop system, and how to sow and grow. Draining is considered the most important part in water management in dry-field farming. To avoid the damage by a flood, ‘back ditch’(draining channel installed in the back side of field) or ‘busaet ditch’(draining channel installed to block the inflow of water or to change the direction of water) is installed. To prevent the loss of soil, especially in dry-field whose slope is steep, contour farming is adopted or soil-protecting crops are chosen. While rainy season is a significantly important weather factor in dry-field farming, starting a second crop at around the rainy season, or applying a different way of sowing is noticeable and the farming method which is called ‘dolgalee’ is a unique way of farming in mountainous agricultural area employed to be prepared for the rainy season by weeding, adding soil to protect plants, and draining. In dry-field farming in mountainous agricultural area, water management focuses on preventing and reducing the flood damage, rather by draining than irrigation. In that respect, management of draining is a fundamental factor to enable farming in such an environment as well as has a close relation with traditional farming method.
