Abstract

The value of traditional hanok[傳統韓屋] is recognized so highly as to be chosen as ‘Han[韓] Brand,’ and recently, efforts have been made increasingly to utilize it as cultural tourism resources. On the other hand, there are many problems raised in the discussions of inheriting and utilizing such hanok culture. Examples of such problems include the discussions about utilization that are concentrated mainly in ‘hanok as building’, resulting in the cultural identity and distinction inherent to hanok culture relegated to a lower priority, and reduced scope of prototype contents related to the traditional hanok, and inadequate efforts to secure them. This paper is to establish the prototype contents of hanok culture synthetically and efficiently as alternatives to these problems and its concrete contents are to accurately grasp 1) timing and principal agent, construction background, 2) comparison and distinction by region, and 3) hanok cultural space and cultural relativity, and through this, to secure proper understanding of the applicable hanok culture, competitiveness and distinction of resources utilization. I expect that this paper can help to specialize, highlight distinction, and secure the scope of utilization, materials, objects, and ideas in utilizing hanok culture as cultural tourism resources. Without attaining this, hanok culture which ‘puts the cart before the horse’ or ‘reverses the proper order’ may emerge or half of the value of hanok culture that emphasizes ‘practicality and aesthetics’, structural superiority, environment-friendly would be lost. Like other traditional culture, architectural culture has factors for conflict in cultural value and meanings of traditional era in modern society. So failure to understand historical, regional, and cultural historical value is bound to result in distortion and refraction. In this context, the strict distinction between cultural historical symbolism and practicality is necessary, and for that reason, in order to inherit the proper function and value of hanok culture, the establishment and test of synthetic data (prototype contents) of hinok culture and understanding of meanings should precede. It is because, by doing so, the competitiveness and distinction of hanok culture that can be utilized or symbolized by Han Brand can be attained.
