Abstract

This paper examines traces (or copies) left by scrambling. We investigate reflexives, wh-words, and quantifiers involved in scrambling, with a focus on how their traces act at the interpretational level LF. The result shows us that scrambling of monomorphemic words, monomorphemic reflexives and wh-words, ensues a trace visible at LF, whereas that of complex words, bimorphemic reflexives and quantifiers, does not. By defining reconstruction as a trace effect, coupled with the minimalist assumption that a syntactic object with no LF role need not be represented on that level (i.e., 'representational economy'), we conclude that monomorphemic words do not undergo reconstruction, as opposed to morphologically complex words that undergo reconstruction. In this paper we show that a slight modification of Lasnik's (1993) 'checking theory residue of EPP' provides a nice account for the differing behavior in reconstruction.
