The Structure of Null Subjects

Abstract

This paper shows that the widely accepted pro-licensing analysis of null subjects put forward in Rizzi (1986) is not compatible with the feature-checking system put forward in Chomsky (1995, 1998, 1999, 2001). Following Holmberg (2003, 2004), pronoun deletion at PF is advocated. Removing the pro-drop parameter, it is argued that such relation between null subjects and rich agreement is a matter of performance rather than competence. In the current version of feature checking, both agreement pro-drop and dicourse pro-drop languages are considered. It is argued that, in the two different types of pro-drop languages, only agreement pro-drop languages have ϕ-features in T.
