Notes on PP Subject Construction in English

초록

Abstract

In this paper, we will consider the status of PP subjects in Spec-T. As for PP subjects in English, we will point out that the distribution of PP subjects has not been given a satisfactory account by previous syntactic-based and semantic-based analysis. On the basis of the assumption that the syntactic expression can be determinable under the meaning of the verb (Levin & Rappaport 1995), we will propose that Unaccusativity Condition allow us to be a means of identifying PP subject in Spec-T. This condition claims that PPs in Spec-T that denote a time and a place are restricted to unaccusativity status of the verb.
