청주 ‘압각수(鴨脚樹)’ 전설의 전승력과 ‘홍수’ 화소의 지역성

청주 압각수전설은 사건의 중요성에서는 역사전설이고 인물의 중요성으로 보면 명인전설(인물전설)이며, 사물의 지역사적 중요성에서 보면 역사유적전설이고 나무 자체만을 보면 수목전설이다. 이렇게 다양한 성격으로 전설적 표현이 확장되고 있음은 곧 전설 증거물에 지워진 의미가 역사, 문화, 자연 등 다방면에 연결되어 있고 그 중요성이 크기 때문이다. 전설 증거물은 비록 단일하지만 그 증거력이 매우 무거운 것이 압각수라는 사물인 셈이다. 그와 동시에, 위 전설의 출발은 무엇보다도 지역전설성에 있다. 특수한 역사적 사건이 중앙으로 알려져 역사로 기록되고, 인물일화로 전승되고, 역사 유적으로 정리되어 나갔지만, 그 뿌리는 일정 지역에서 사물을 대상으로 발생한 ‘사건’이었다. 사건과 인물의 비중으로 하여 본디 전설에서 다른 범위로까지 확대되었으나 그 출발은 나무를 기반으로 한 지역전설성에 두어져 있다. 이 글은 위 전설의 이러한 전설적 영향과 파장을 주목하되 특히 지역전설로서의 고유성을 주목하고 강조하는 데에 논의의 초점을 두어 이해를 꾀해본 것이다. 특히 홍수 화소는 압각수전설의 뿌리라는 점에서 더욱 중요하다. 청주는 청주시 자체의 지리적 특성상, 그리고 상류 쪽의 지리적 특성상 홍수 피해가 잦고 클 수밖에 없는 취약성을 지역특수성으로 지니고 있었다. 그러므로 지역전설로서의 위 전설의 근원은 홍수에 있고, 그것의 지역적 특수성과 긴밀히 연관되어 있었던 것이다. 그런 점에서 볼 때 압각수전설이 처음 전설로 성립된 것도 이 지역 홍수 현상의 ‘예외성’으로 가능했고, 그것이 오랜 역사 속에서 전승력을 유지할 수 있었던 데에도 지속적이고 반복적인 홍수 체험이 영향을 주었다고 할 수 있다. 지역전설의 이해에서는 바로 이러한 전설 증거물의 지역적 독자성을 밝히는 일이 중요하다고 하겠는데, 위 전설은 이에 대한 적례를 보여주고 있다는 점에서 다시금 주목할 만한 의의가 있다고 하겠다.
Abstract
There is an old ginkgo tree called 'Apgaksu'(鴨脚樹) in Jungang Park in Cheongju city in Chungbuk Province. This tree is closely related to historical events during tumultuous periods from the late Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty and there is a legend about times. This paper aims at examining periodical difference in literature on the Apgaktree legend, specifically noting the localization of this legend. The Apgaktree legend is a historical legend in terms of its historical importance, a character legend in terms of the importance of the characters, a historical relic legend in terms of the importance of the object, and a tree legend in terms of the importance of the tree itself. The various characteristics of this tree show that the documents of the legends on this tree are related to history, culture and nature although they are hidden. Although documents on this legend tell a single story, there is much grave evidence behind it. At the same time, this legend started as a local legend. Local specific historical events were reported to the central government for recoding, and a single character story emerged. Finally it became of historical interest. However, its root is based on a historical event that happened in a specific local area to a specific object. Because of the importance of the event and character, this legend expanded. But it is originally based on a local legend about a tree. This paper focuses on the influential power of this legend and specifically, its endemism as a local legend. Also, a ‘flooding’ motif is important as a root of the Apgaksu legend. Since geographically Cheongju City is located on the upper part of a river, it experienced a lot of major flooding damage. The first motif of this legend was serious flooding in the Cheongju area. This legend has been handed down from generation to generation and repetitive flooding experiences influenced the creation of this legend as powerful folklore. Therefore, this legend indicates that natural conditions, flooding and events of the Mushimriver(無心川) in Cheongju city formed an inevitable chain of events. It is the main goal of this paper to examine the local natural conditions through legend by demonstrating the originality of this legend as specifically local legend. I hope this paper will help bring understanding to legends that emphasize local characteristics.
