Abstract

This study looked into the aspect of self-spliting by taking note of the self-reflective characteristic in Lee, Byungju's novel. There appears a character, on whom the writer himself is directly, or indirectly projected, in Lee, Byungju's novel. The characters, as the writer's persona, are a sort of method of aiming to expose the literary belief of Lee, Byungju himself intending to record a fact, and also play a role as an explainer of his mistakes in the past. Also, there is a case where the writer himself appears in the novel as a real identity of novelist Lee, Byungju, which reflects his intention of collapsing the boundary between a fact and a fiction, and has the meaning of expressing his attitudes as a novelist concurrently. In addition, in many cases, there appears another character who delivers and explain an event besides the key character as his alter ego in Lee, Byungju's novel. These explainers only deliver the key character's narration, or expose fragmentary impressions on history without any their identity in the narration; thus, it is learned that they are of schizotype of narrative main agents. Splitting of narrative main agents in Lee, Byungju's novel is clearly exposed through setting of a double narrator through frame composition, and dualized space structure. A key character and explainers appear as individual narrators who occupy separate time and space, but eventually, they have only the role of delivering the narrative of a key character, who is the alter ego of the writer Lee, Byung-ju having the will to record the history the writer himself witnessed. Through this context, it is learned that splitting of the main agent of a narrative is a device for stating objective records. Conclusively, it might be safe to say that the self-spliting in Lee, Byungju's novel is a sort of description strategy employed by Lee, Byung-ju who grappled with how effectively he could reproduce and record history through fictitious writing, i.e. a novel.
