초록
This paper argues against incorporation accounts of verbal noun constructions and proposes an analysis without making recourse to incorporation. The incorporation approach cannot avoid several non-trivial problems, thereby necessitating an alternative account which dispenses with incorporation. Verbal nouns take a derived nominal structure as well as a gerund structure. Also, verbal nouns turn out to be verbs, not nouns, and the insertion of the dummy verb hata ‘do' is triggered by a prosody reason at PF.
Abstract
This paper argues against incorporation accounts of verbal noun constructions and proposes an analysis without making recourse to incorporation. The incorporation approach cannot avoid several non-trivial problems, thereby necessitating an alternative account which dispenses with incorporation. Verbal nouns take a derived nominal structure as well as a gerund structure. Also, verbal nouns turn out to be verbs, not nouns, and the insertion of the dummy verb hata ‘do' is triggered by a prosody reason at PF.
