Our Asian heritage boasts multiple traditions of literature that proponents would claim far surpasses Shakespeare’s works in value and significance. How do those of us who profess Shakespeare in Asian locations justify our commitment to Shakespeare on the curriculum and in the classroom? What claims to significance do we as Shakespeareans make on behalf of this global cultural icon from the West? Is our advocacy based on professional expediency or profound exegesis and rationalization? At this moment of deep economic crisis in the West, it is apposite to consider the questions I am posing in our own sphere of the educational domain here in the East.
