초록
The purpose of this paper is to analyze Shakespeare’s romance Cymbeline from the perspective of nationalism. King Cymbeline regarded Cloten, his step son, as his potential son-in-law. It was because he judged that Cloten had the qualities of a future king such as political insight, determination and courage. It’s hard to understand how the Queen and Cloten counteract the threatening Roman ambassador, who is labeled a villain, with patriotic lines, but Shakespeare at that moment showed the surprise of turning the villains into patriots. However, the writer believes that the patriotism of the queen and Cloten might be true, from the perspective of nationalism. In conclusion, the negative assessment of King Cymbeline, also the title of the work, or his mistakes, is thought to be understandable from the perspective of one king who believed in the ideology of nationalism.
