Abstract

This paper compares Wissijulhaengrok with Banssijun. It is meaningful to compare them because they have the same motif, conflict among daughter-in-laws which is very rare in Korean classical novels, but they show many differences in details. Wissijulhaengrok and Banssijun deal with sufferings of heroin caused by conflict among daughter-in-laws. However there are several differences below. The former deals with establishment of woman's identity through various conflicts which could commonly happen in ordinary life. On the contrary, the latter deals with establishment of authority of family through conflicts among those who covet it. The former has complicated conflict structure and characterizes ordinary people who are not divided by measure of virtue or vice. But the latter simplifies and deepens conflict structure through strong antagonism and characterizes typical virtuous men and villains. Both novels appear many similarities such as subject matters, style and a quantity, so are estimated that authors in the same class created them and are classified same type. Nevertheless each of them has a different view of the world, therefore it is reconfirmed that there is diversity in Korean classical novels.
